Was one of the largest independent video SSPs globally, with particular strength in CTV and OTT monetization before being acquired by Magnite in 2021.
SpotX was a prominent video advertising platform and supply-side platform (SSP) that specialized in programmatic video ad monetization for publishers, broadcasters, and streaming services. Founded in 2007 and headquartered in Denver, Colorado, SpotX built a comprehensive suite of tools enabling media owners to manage, sell, and optimize their video ad inventory across connected TV (CTV), desktop, and mobile environments. The platform offered capabilities including real-time bidding, private marketplace deals, audience targeting, and advanced analytics, making it a critical infrastructure layer for the rapidly growing streaming and CTV advertising ecosystem. SpotX grew to become one of the most significant players in the video SSP space, particularly distinguishing itself through deep expertise in CTV and OTT monetization at a time when linear TV audiences were migrating to streaming platforms. The company was majority-owned by RTL Group, the European broadcasting giant, which provided both strategic backing and access to premium publisher relationships. SpotX served hundreds of major media companies and broadcasters globally, processing billions of ad decisions daily and positioning itself as a trusted partner for premium video inventory monetization. In April 2021, Magnite — the world's largest independent sell-side advertising platform — acquired SpotX from RTL Group for approximately $1.17 billion, signaling a major consolidation in the CTV and streaming ad tech space. Following the acquisition, SpotX's technology and team were integrated into Magnite's streaming business. The SpotX brand was ultimately retired, with its capabilities absorbed into what became Magnite's SpringServe ad server product (rebranded as such in April 2025). SpotX's legacy lives on through Magnite's dominant position in CTV and streaming advertising infrastructure.
