Was a top-tier enterprise CDN and streaming media platform backed by Verizon's network infrastructure, competing with Akamai and Fastly before being sold and eventually shut down via the Edgio bankruptcy in 2025.
Verizon Media Platform (VMP) was the content delivery network and streaming media infrastructure division of Verizon Communications, operating under the earlier name Verizon Digital Media Services (VDMS) before rebranding. The platform provided enterprise-grade CDN, video streaming, edge computing, and media processing services to broadcasters, OTT providers, publishers, and large-scale digital media companies. It competed directly with Akamai, Fastly, and Limelight Networks in the CDN and streaming delivery space, positioning itself on the strength of Verizon's extensive network infrastructure and global points of presence. In 2022, Verizon sold the platform to Limelight Networks, which subsequently rebranded itself as Edgecast and then merged with Limelight to form Edgio — a combined CDN and edge services company. The transaction was intended to create a stronger competitor in the CDN market by combining Verizon's media delivery assets with Limelight's existing infrastructure and customer base. Edgio continued to serve many of VMP's original enterprise media and streaming customers under the new brand. However, Edgio struggled financially following the merger. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and ultimately sold key assets to Akamai Technologies. Edgio ceased operations in January 2025, bringing the entire Verizon Media Platform lineage to an end. The platform's legacy lives on in the broader CDN industry, having served major media events and high-profile streaming deployments during its operational years, and its infrastructure assets were absorbed into Akamai's network.
