About

Was the world's largest programmatic video SSP and exchange at the time of its acquisition by Facebook in 2014

LiveRail was a programmatic video advertising platform founded in 2007 and headquartered in San Francisco, California. At its peak, it was the largest video supply-side platform (SSP) and exchange in the world, enabling premium publishers to monetize their video inventory through real-time bidding and programmatic demand. LiveRail's technology allowed publishers to manage, optimize, and sell video ad inventory across desktop and mobile environments, connecting them with a broad ecosystem of demand-side platforms and advertisers. Facebook acquired LiveRail in August 2014 for an estimated $500 million, signaling its ambition to extend its advertising reach beyond its own properties into the broader open web. Under Facebook, LiveRail was positioned as a vehicle to bring Facebook's powerful audience data and targeting capabilities to off-Facebook video inventory, effectively powering the video component of Facebook's Audience Network. This represented one of Facebook's most significant moves into third-party ad tech infrastructure at the time. Despite the strategic promise, Facebook began winding down LiveRail's operations relatively quickly. In January 2016, Facebook shut down LiveRail's ad-serving business, and the video ad exchange was fully closed by May 2016. Facebook pivoted away from operating external video ad tech infrastructure, choosing instead to focus its ad tech investments on its own owned-and-operated properties. LiveRail's technology and talent were absorbed into Facebook's broader advertising infrastructure, but the LiveRail brand and platform ceased to exist as a distinct product.
