About
Formerly one of the largest independent ad servers globally; a neutral alternative to Google's ad tech stack before being acquired by Amazon and discontinued
Sizmek was one of the largest independent ad serving and programmatic advertising platforms in the world, offering a comprehensive suite of tools for digital campaign management, creative optimization, and data-driven targeting across display, video, mobile, and social channels. Founded in 2000 and headquartered in New York, the company served agencies, advertisers, and publishers globally, positioning itself as a neutral, open alternative to walled-garden ad tech stacks operated by Google and Facebook. At its peak, Sizmek powered hundreds of thousands of campaigns annually and was considered a critical piece of infrastructure for independent programmatic advertising. Sizmek's history was marked by aggressive consolidation. The company grew substantially through acquisitions, absorbing notable ad tech firms including PointRoll, Peer39, Rocket Fuel, and others to build out its data, creative, and programmatic capabilities. It was taken private by Vector Capital in 2016 after previously trading on the NASDAQ. Despite its scale and breadth of offerings, Sizmek struggled with profitability amid intense competition from Google's ad tech stack and shifting market dynamics. In March 2019, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Following the bankruptcy filing, Amazon acquired Sizmek's ad server and dynamic creative optimization (DCO) assets in May 2019 for undisclosed terms. The Sizmek brand was gradually wound down under Amazon's ownership, and in January 2024, Amazon formally launched Amazon Ad Server, built on the foundation of the Sizmek ad server technology. By Q4 2024, the Sizmek brand was fully discontinued, marking the end of one of the most prominent independent ad tech platforms of the 2000s and 2010s. Its legacy endures through the infrastructure it contributed to Amazon's growing advertising business.
