About

Was a leading cloud-based eCommerce platform for enterprise retailers prior to acquisition; now forms the foundation of Salesforce Commerce Cloud (B2C).

Demandware was a Burlington, Massachusetts-based SaaS company that built and operated one of the first and most widely adopted cloud-based eCommerce platforms for enterprise and mid-market retailers. Founded in 2004, the company offered a multi-tenant, cloud-native platform that enabled brands and retailers to manage online storefronts, merchandising, promotions, and customer experiences at scale. Its subscription-based model, combined with a revenue-share component tied to gross merchandise value (GMV), aligned the company's success directly with its customers' sales performance — a differentiated approach that resonated strongly with enterprise retail clients. Demandware went public on the NYSE under the ticker DWRE in 2012, becoming one of the early SaaS IPOs in the eCommerce infrastructure space. The platform attracted a roster of prominent global retail brands, including Adidas, Barneys New York, and Lands' End, cementing its reputation as a premium solution for omnichannel commerce. Its open development framework and robust partner ecosystem allowed brands to customize and extend the platform, while its cloud architecture ensured continuous updates and global scalability without the burden of on-premise infrastructure. In June 2016, Salesforce announced its acquisition of Demandware for approximately $2.8 billion — one of the largest SaaS acquisitions at the time. The deal closed in July 2016, and by October 2016 Salesforce had rebranded the platform as Salesforce Commerce Cloud, integrating it into its broader Customer Success Platform alongside Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, and Marketing Cloud. The Demandware brand was fully retired following the acquisition, and the technology lives on as the foundation of Salesforce Commerce Cloud's B2C commerce offering.
