Gimlet was a leading independent podcast production studio before being acquired by Spotify

Overview

Gimlet Media was a digital media company and podcast network founded in 2014 by former This American Life producers Alex Blumberg and Matthew Lieber. The company specialized in creating high-quality narrative podcasts across various genres including business, science, music, and culture. Gimlet became known for popular shows like StartUp (which documented the company's own founding), Reply All, Homecoming, and Crimetown, establishing itself as a pioneer in premium podcast production during the medium's growth period. Gimlet Media operated as an independent podcast studio until February 2019, when Spotify acquired the company for approximately $230 million as part of its strategy to dominate the podcasting space. The acquisition was one of several podcast-related purchases Spotify made to build its audio content library and reduce dependence on music licensing. Following the acquisition, Gimlet continued to produce content under the Spotify umbrella but gradually lost its independent brand identity. By 2024, Spotify had effectively dissolved Gimlet Media as a distinct entity, integrating its operations fully into Spotify Studios and laying off staff as part of broader restructuring efforts. While Gimlet's brand and independent operations ceased to exist, many of its popular podcast titles continued under Spotify's ownership, and the company's legacy remained significant in establishing podcasting as a legitimate medium for narrative storytelling and attracting major corporate investment to the space.
