About
Former major integrated loyalty and marketing-services conglomerate; now operates solely as a credit card issuer under the Bread Financial brand
Alliance Data Systems (ADS) was a Columbus, Ohio-based data-driven marketing and loyalty services company founded in 1996. At its peak it operated three major segments: Epsilon (a large-scale data and digital marketing services division including the Conversant personalization platform), LoyaltyOne (which operated the AIR MILES Reward Program in Canada and BrandLoyalty globally), and Card Services (a private-label and co-brand credit card issuer for retail partners). The company was a significant player in the AdTech and MarTech ecosystem, offering brands first-party data, CRM, email marketing, loyalty program management, and performance-based digital advertising through Conversant. In 2019, ADS sold Epsilon—including Conversant—to Publicis Groupe for approximately $4.4 billion, marking one of the largest AdTech/MarTech acquisitions of that era. This divestiture fundamentally shifted ADS's identity away from marketing services and toward financial services. The company subsequently sold LoyaltyOne in 2021 and rebranded itself as Bread Financial Holdings in 2022, focusing exclusively on its credit card and lending business for retail and healthcare partners. As Alliance Data Systems, the company was publicly traded on the NYSE and served hundreds of brand partners across retail, petroleum, grocery, and travel sectors. Its historical significance in AdTech lies in its early recognition that transaction-level purchase data, loyalty program membership, and personalized digital advertising could be unified into a closed-loop marketing ecosystem—a model that influenced how the broader industry thinks about identity resolution and performance marketing.
