Maxar Technologies was a Westminster, Colorado-based space technology company that specialized in Earth observation satellite imagery, geospatial data analytics, and satellite manufacturing. The company operated one of the world's most capable commercial satellite constellations, including the WorldView and GeoEye series, delivering high-resolution imagery used for defense intelligence, mapping, environmental monitoring, and commercial applications. Maxar's imagery and geospatial intelligence products were foundational to platforms like Google Maps and Apple Maps, as well as critical national security applications for the U.S. government and allied nations. Maxar was formed through a series of mergers and acquisitions, most notably the 2017 combination of DigitalGlobe and MDA (MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates), creating a vertically integrated space and geospatial intelligence company. The company also operated a satellite manufacturing and space systems division that built satellites for commercial and government customers. Maxar's data and analytics capabilities were delivered through its Maxar Intelligence platform, offering subscription and on-demand access to its vast imagery archive and analytics tools. In 2023, Maxar Technologies was acquired by Advent International, a private equity firm, in a transaction valued at approximately $6.4 billion, taking the company private. Following the acquisition, Maxar was split into two distinct business units: Maxar Intelligence (focused on Earth observation and geospatial data) and Maxar Space (focused on satellite manufacturing and space infrastructure). While the Maxar brand continues under private ownership, the publicly traded entity ceased to exist, marking the end of its chapter as a publicly listed company.
