About

Was one of two dominant providers of media management and financial software for large advertising agencies in the U.S. prior to its merger with MediaBank to form Mediaocean.

Donovan Data Systems (DDS) was one of the most influential technology companies in the history of advertising operations, founded in 1967 by Tom Donovan in New York City. For over four decades, DDS served as the essential infrastructure for advertising agencies, providing software systems that managed the complex workflows of media buying, billing, traffic, and financial reconciliation. At its peak, DDS processed hundreds of billions of dollars in advertising transactions annually and was deeply embedded in the operations of virtually every major advertising agency holding company in the United States. DDS built its reputation on robust, enterprise-grade systems that handled the end-to-end lifecycle of an advertising campaign — from initial media planning and buying through to invoicing, accounts payable, and financial reporting. Its flagship platforms became industry standards, and the company maintained long-standing relationships with agencies at WPP, Interpublic, Omnicom, Publicis, and other major holding companies. The company's deep integration into agency workflows made it an indispensable partner in an era when advertising operations were becoming increasingly complex across broadcast, print, and emerging digital channels. In March 2012, Donovan Data Systems merged with MediaBank — a competing media management software provider — to form Mediaocean, creating a dominant force in advertising workflow and financial management software. The merger was backed by Vista Equity Partners and effectively consolidated the two largest players in agency media management into a single entity. The DDS brand was retired as part of the transition, with its products, technology, and client relationships absorbed into the Mediaocean platform, which continues to operate today as the leading system of record for global advertising spend.
