Pioneer in real-time mobile facial tracking AR; acquired and absorbed by Snap Inc. to power Snapchat Lenses

Looksery was a Ukrainian computer vision and augmented reality startup founded in Odessa, Ukraine, that developed real-time facial tracking and transformation technology for mobile devices. The company built sophisticated algorithms capable of detecting and mapping facial features in real time, enabling dynamic overlays, animations, and visual effects to be applied to faces in live video — a technically demanding challenge on the constrained hardware of smartphones at the time. Looksery released a standalone app that demonstrated these capabilities, attracting significant attention from the technology and social media industries. In September 2015, Snap Inc. (then Snapchat) acquired Looksery for approximately $150 million, one of the largest acquisitions in Ukrainian tech history at that point. The deal was primarily a technology and talent acquisition: Looksery's facial recognition and augmented reality engine was rapidly integrated into Snapchat and became the foundational technology behind Snapchat Lenses — the interactive, real-time face filters that went on to become one of the platform's most defining and viral features. The acquisition was later confirmed to have cost $150 million when Snap disclosed the figure in its 2017 IPO filings. Following the acquisition, the Looksery brand was retired and the team was absorbed into Snap Inc.'s engineering organization. The technology's legacy, however, is enormous: Snapchat Lenses drove massive user engagement, spawned an entire industry of AR face filters across competing platforms including Instagram and TikTok, and established Snap as a pioneer in consumer augmented reality. Looksery's work effectively seeded the mainstream adoption of real-time facial AR effects in social media.
