OpenAI dropped one of the most consequential ad format announcements in years this week: a new ChatGPT ad unit built around 'click to chat, not to site.' Rather than routing users to a landing page, the format initiates a branded AI conversation — a model that could fundamentally alter how performance advertisers think about conversion funnels. If users can research, compare, and even purchase within a chat interface, the traditional click-through paradigm loses its primacy. This is OpenAI's clearest signal yet that it intends to compete directly with Google and Meta for performance ad dollars, not just brand awareness budgets.

Simultaneously, Google rolled out a pay-per-use AI licensing program for publishers — a move that attempts to address the long-simmering tension between AI content consumption and publisher revenue. By attaching a usage-based commercial model to AI-generated summaries and citations, Google is trying to thread the needle between its AI ambitions and its publisher relationships. Whether this satisfies publishers who feel their content is being strip-mined remains to be seen, but it represents a meaningful structural shift in how AI platforms compensate content creators.
